Unit Overview: Students examined traditional Huichol Yarn Paintings and themes in order to design and create their own yarn painting inspired by the Huichol culture.
Students examined and discussed the Huichol culture of Mexico and learned about traditional yarn paintings and the meanings behind the signs and symbols in yarn paintings. Students designed a yarn painting of their own inspired by Huichol symbology. Students applied yarn painting to show how lines created shape and form. To fill the background, students colored additional spaces and shapes using crayons.

Unit Overview: Students examined Kenyan Soapstone Painted Rock Art and designed a pattern using three motifs in order to create a personalized river rock art design.
Students reviewed pattern and motif in this short, 3-D unit. We also examine an art form that is little known about and very beautiful - Kenyan Soapstone Painted Rock Art. Students analyzed the designs on the rocks and discussed what made the patterns special, similar, different, and personal to the artist. Students then practiced a design sketch of their own and chose a rock for their river rock design. Students used metallic paint pens and sharpies to complete this project. I loved how this sub plan turned out. It was so cool to see the ideas that students came up with to create their own comic/superhero character.
Unit Overview: Students learned about birds of paradise and their behaviors in order to prepare to design their own bird of fantasy. Students examined the proportions of birds such as flamingos, owls, eagles, hummingbirds, etc. in order to understand how to design their own bird of fantasy.
Students learned about various types of birds and birds of paradise. Students then did multiple practice drawings of birds by breaking the form of a bird down into various shapes to create a foundation on which to build the bird. Students then combined different bird bodies, beaks, and crests to design their own bird of fantasy. Students painted their birds using watercolor paints. Students learned dry and wet technique in watercolor. I also reviewed how to fix mistakes made using watercolor and how to create dark and light colors using watercolor paint. Unit Overview: Students studied shape and line in order to create monsters with imagination. Students learned about background and colored the background using one color to create emphasis of the monster. After discussing and learning about line, students learned how lines come together to create geometric and organic shapes. Students combined lines to create shapes and talked about the number of sides that the shapes had. Students colored the backgrounds of their monsters using one color to create emphasis for their monsters. Students did a practice drawing of their monsters before creating their final to work out shapes, lines, and colors. Students were given more creative freedom on their practice paper in order to acknowledge any creative problems that may need to be solved. The monster finals were vibrant colors and beautifully drawn. These monsters will be used in Art to Remember. I also had two kindergarten students who needed a lot of help. These students had a hard time grasping the concepts of shapes, lines, and background.
After working with them one on one, here is their improvement in their class. I must say that I am beyond proud of these two students and their improvement and dedication to problem solve these artful concepts. |
