Unit Overview: Students studied the history of Egyptian mummification and the process of embalming a person in order to understand why canopic jars were important. Students discussed how embalming is important today. Students applied their understanding of canopic jars to the ceramic handbuilding technique of soft slab building in order to build their canopic jar. Unit Overview: Students were introduced to clay by creating a pinch pot. Students learned about clay, where it comes from, how to handle it, and how to manipulate it to create art. Students designed their pinch pot designs based on fairy garden pots and were inspired by the artist Kendal Murray.
Unit Overview: Students learned about the ceramic handbuilding technique of coil pots in order to create a coil pot of their own. Students learned how to score and slip, coil, widen, narrow, and build up on their coil pots.
Unit Overview: Students learned about famous artist, Pablo Picasso, and studied how he creates portraits. Students then learned the proper way to draw a portrait with the correct proportions in order to distort the proportions in a way that creates dramatic tension. Students used color, shape, and emotion in a way that imitates the style of Picasso.
Unit Overview: Students learned about safari animals by creating an oil pastel and watercolor painting. Students identified the horizon line and created atmospheric perspective by enlarging or decreasing the size of objects in the foreground, middleground, and background.
