Unit Overview: Students will learn how to create a surreal self- portrait painting in this unit. Students will use paint to create 1) a tonal additive underpainting, 2) a surreal self-portrait, and 3) a painting that demonstrates a limited color palate (monochromatic, analogous, etc.). Artist inspiration includes Elly Smallwood and Picasso’s Blue Period portrait paintings.

Unit Overview: Students will learn about the human figure using Greco-Roman sculpture and contrapposto as the key elements of their understanding of the human figure. Students will look at the sculptures Discobolus and The Dying Gaul as examples of human figures in action. Students will create a human figure drawing of a person in action. Students will choose an athlete on which to base their drawing. Students will incorporate oil pastels using warm and cool color theory in order to demonstrate motion, line, form, and contrast.
Unit Overview: Students will review a feature study of the face in order to prepare for modified portraiture. Students will create two portraits in this unit: 1) a portrait made of various features drawn from observation in order to create a compilation portrait and 2) a portrait drawn from a picture taken while the face is distorted in order to create a distorted face portrait.
