Unit Overview: Students learned about birds of paradise and their behaviors in order to prepare to design their own bird of fantasy. Students examined the proportions of birds such as flamingos, owls, eagles, hummingbirds, etc. in order to understand how to design their own bird of fantasy.
Students learned about various types of birds and birds of paradise. Students then did multiple practice drawings of birds by breaking the form of a bird down into various shapes to create a foundation on which to build the bird. Students then combined different bird bodies, beaks, and crests to design their own bird of fantasy. Students painted their birds using watercolor paints. Students learned dry and wet technique in watercolor. I also reviewed how to fix mistakes made using watercolor and how to create dark and light colors using watercolor paint.
