This project was used in the K-2 age groups during spring break. Students were encouraged to paint a portrait of the Easter Bunny as they believed he would look. Students added individual characteristics to the bunny and pattern to the background.
Unit Overview: Students will experiment with paper mache and yarn in order to create a yarn windchime inspired by Green Art.
This was an experimental unit I tried with my 2nd graders. I definitely would go back and do it with an older age group in the future. It was fun to use recycled materials in this project and talk about how we can use materials that are unorthodox to create something out of the norm. I think it made a lasting impression on the students. It took a while to complete, simply because we had so many half days, assemblies, etc. (Friday class) However, the students were very proud of their work and I hope will hang them in a place where they can see and enjoy them. Unit Overview: Students learned about ceramic techniques by creating a personalized ceramic pencil holder. Students utilized pinch pot, score and slip, and sgraffito techniques.
Unit Overview: Students learned about famous artist, Pablo Picasso, and studied how he creates portraits. Students then learned the proper way to draw a portrait with the correct proportions in order to distort the proportions in a way that creates dramatic tension. Students used color, shape, and emotion in a way that imitates the style of Picasso.
Unit Overview: Students created their own artwork based on the title of a famous museum piece. Students randomly drew a title from a hat and were not shown a picture of the original work. Students analyzed four styles of art, sketched three thumbnail designs of their final artwork design, and experimented with various media and techniques of art to create their final artwork. Students then participated in a critique to compare and contrast their artwork with the museum piece.
Unit Overview: Students manipulated tissue paper in order to create warm and cool color tie-dye backgrounds. Students studied artist Johanna Bassford in order to create a black and white zentangle animal design. Students created a tie-dye animal design in order to show warm/cool colors and contrast.
Unit Overview: Students examined underwater environments in order to study the warm/cool colors in coral reefs. Students studied the proportions and body shape of fish in order to draw life-like marine animals. Students used warm color oil pastels to draw their fish and cool color watercolors to paint their backgrounds.
Unit Overview: Students learned about birds of paradise and their behaviors in order to prepare to design their own bird of fantasy. Students examined the proportions of birds such as flamingos, owls, eagles, hummingbirds, etc. in order to understand how to design their own bird of fantasy.
Students learned about various types of birds and birds of paradise. Students then did multiple practice drawings of birds by breaking the form of a bird down into various shapes to create a foundation on which to build the bird. Students then combined different bird bodies, beaks, and crests to design their own bird of fantasy. Students painted their birds using watercolor paints. Students learned dry and wet technique in watercolor. I also reviewed how to fix mistakes made using watercolor and how to create dark and light colors using watercolor paint. Unit Overview: Students will create a line drawing in order to demonstrate use of horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines.
I like to use this lesson as a fun way to introduce/review horizontal, diagonal, and vertical lines in the primary age groups of elementary. Teaching these lines is important because they are the foundation to shape, landscapes, portraits, pattern, and more. You can never review line too often. |
